How to Make Someone Feel Important

One of the most important lessons I ever learned is to pretend that every single person you meet has a sign around his or her neck that says, “Make me feel important.”

When you make the person feel important, you increase that person’s self-esteem and confidence.

Be sincere. Search diligently for good things to admired. Praise the person privately and publicly. Praise before one’s peers is one of the most important things you can do to boost a person’s self-esteem.

Often we learn more from watching something done incorrectly than correctly. I once stood in line for more than two hours to shake hands with a man I greatly admired. When my turn finally came, he shook my hand but didn’t even see me or hear me because he was looking over my shoulder to see how many more people stood in line.

I felt empty and betrayed for having stood in that line so long only to be ignored. Right then, I decided if I ever became the person people wanted to see, I would focus all my attention on the one person in front of me and make him or her feel important.
